Red Light Therapy

A Guide to Anti-Aging Benefits

One of the newest beauty trends is Red Light Therapy (RLT), a treatment that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), can help with acne, skin aging, wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin. Recently, it has also been gaining popularity for addressing hair loss.

What Exactly Is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses red or near-infrared light, sometimes referred to as photobiomodulation. Thanks to its ease of use at home and its non-invasive nature, RLT is a great complementary treatment to more intensive therapies like microneedling or chemical peels.

How Effective Is It?

The AAD highlights multiple studies showing that LED-based red light therapy has positive effects on signs of skin aging after several weeks of consistent use. To achieve the best results, regular treatments are key. However, the frequency and intensity of treatments may vary depending on individual needs and expectations.

For example, I personally do 3 to 4 sessions of 10 minutes each week. Starting with a similar routine can be a good idea. After a few weeks, you can adjust based on how you feel and the results you observe.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

Unlike UV light, red and near-infrared light do not pose long-term risks. Short-term side effects like mild skin irritation or temporary discomfort are rare and typically minimal. According to the AAD, these effects are mild and infrequent. Additionally, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has cleared several red light therapy devices for public use, ensuring their safety.

If your device includes safety equipment, such as eye protection, make sure to use it during every treatment to further ensure safety.

When Will I See Results ?

It’s important to understand that red light therapy requires patience. Results may take weeks or even months to become noticeable. In some cases, the aging process of your skin might not stop or reverse but may slow down significantly. Setting realistic expectations will help you stay motivated to continue the treatments.

If you are considering red light therapy for hair loss, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist first. Hair loss caused by hormonal or genetic factors may respond differently to the treatment.
